Once Human: Electric Eel Deviant – How to Get & Use

Electric Eel is one of the most important deviants in Once Human. As long as it is active, it increases the amount of energy from 1 of the generators in your territory. The higher the Skill Rating of the Electric Eel deviant, the greater the bonus to energy production you will get.

Best Location

Electric Eel deviant can be obtained through fishing. The best location for this is a pier east of the Blackheart’s Bay Teleportation Tower (Red Sands region, (7203, 94)). Technically, there are other spots for farming Electric Eels, but at this particular spot, you mostly get them with high Skill and Activity Ratings.

Best Location for farming Electric Eels (Manibus, PVE)

First of all, you need to craft at least a simple Fishing Rod using a Supply Workbench. When that’s done, go to the fisherman NPC Margerie on the pier, buy Mince Bait, and start fishing.

When using Mince Bait for fishing at this location, you will only get Electric Eels and sometimes Barracuda.

The trick is, you can see what fish is on the hook before you actually pull it out of the water, so when Barracuda bites, you can simply drop it by pressing “Esc” so as not to waste time.

How to Buy Electric Eel

Note that from the NPC Margerie, you can also buy a Formula for an Advanced Fishing Rod and an Electric Eel deviant itself for 2000 Energy Links. This Electric Eel will have a Skill Rating of 1 and an Activity Rating of 1 – this is not enough.

If you want to boost power production in your territory, you need Electric Eel deviants with a Skill Rating of 5 (maximum).

How Electric Eel Works

Electric Eel in isolated securement units

When you place an Electric Eel in an Isolated Securement Unit, it links to one of the active generators in your territory. As long as the Electric Eel is active (not in dormant mode), you can see it flying above the generator. When in dormant mode, Electric Eels stop giving a bonus to power production.

Electric Eels are working, flying above the generators

The bonus depends on the Skill Rating and current Mood of the Electric Eel. The maximum Skill Rating in the game is 5. When the Mood of the deviant is low, the bonus to power production decreases.

The maximum number of generators you can place in your territory is 6 (or 8 if you have corresponding Memetics Specializations — “Generator: Electrical Expert” and “Hydropower Generator: One with the Tides”), so you need at least 6 Electric Eels with a high Skill Rating.

Having an Electric Eel with a Skill Rating of 5 for each of the generators in your territory, you can almost double power production.

Securement Enviroment

You can speed up Deviant Power and Mood regeneration in the following ways:

  • Blue Light (10%) – place a Blue Circular Light next to the Isolated Securement Unit (Furniture → Lighting).
  • Music (10%) – place a Radio next to the Isolated Securement Unit, then turn it on and select any radio station from the list (Furniture → Home Entertainment).
  • Warm (5%) – the Isolated Securement Unit must be placed in a warm region of the map. This bonus depends on the environment temperature. For example, even if your territory is in desert, the bonus might stop working at night because of the temperature drop. My tests show that in the current patch, you can’t get this bonus artificially by placing Furnaces, Electric Heaters or Cooling Fans next to Isolated Securement Units as it was before.

How to Make Electric Eels Work with No Delay

There is a way to make Electric Eels work with no delay, which means they will not enter dormant mode. For this, you need a special deviant — Extradimensional Cat – Moonlit Jewels. This cat has a unique ability to restore the power of other territory-type deviants while in dormant mode.

Extradimensional Cat – Moonlit Jewels unique trait

  1. Place Extradimensional Cat – Moonlit Jewels in an Isolated Securement Unit in your territory.
  2. Adjust the activation threshold to 30 Deviant Power, which is the minimum. It’s important because we want the cat to enter dormant mode as often as possible to restore the power of Electric Eels.
  3. For all your Electric Eels, set a higher activation threshold — for example, 80-100 Deviant Power. This is needed because we want them to start working at a higher Power than the cat. In this case, the cat will enter dormant mode before them and start restoring their Power.

As a result, you will get constantly working Electric Eels. The major downside of this solution is that you will get significantly less of a bonus to power production because the Electric Eels will gradually lose their Mood. Since Mood can only be restored in dormant mode, they won’t be able to restore it and will work much less effectively.

This also applies to your other territory deviants. Extradimensional Cat – Moonlit Jewels restores the Power of all territory-type deviants, so they will all work constantly without any chance to restore their Mood.
