Cold Crystal Ore is only available in the “Way of Winter” scenario and spawns in the cold regions of the map. In this guide, you will learn where to find Cold Crystal Ore, how to gather it properly, and how to use it.
Best Location
The best location for gathering Cold Crystal Ore is a small frost island north of the Firewatch Harbor location.
There is a lot of Cold Crystal Ore in this area, and the deposits spawn relatively close to each other, so you will spend fewer Molotov Cocktails to gather them.
Despite the fact that this spot is quite far from a teleportation tower — meaning you won’t be able to quickly switch worlds — this place is still one of the best thanks to the high density of ore deposits.
How to Gather
If you approach Cold Crystal Ore and try to gather it, it will explode. To mine this ore, you must increase its temperature, and there are two ways to do this.
Molotov Cocktails
Throw a Molotov Cocktail at the Crystal Ore Deposit, and you will be able to gather it. You will need a Steel Pickaxe or better for this.
Molotov Cocktails can be crafted using a Synthesis Bench. To do this, first unlock them in the Memetics → Crafting tab under the nodes “Explosive Throwables” and “Advanced Explosive Throwables.”
Fire Throwing Dagger
If you have the rare Memetics perk called “Ice Throwing Dagger and Flame Throwing Dagger,” you can craft a Fire Throwing Dagger on a Supplies Workbench. Since Memetics Specializations are random, you may need to buy it from other players.
The trick is that you only need one Fire Throwing Dagger because it does not disappear after you throw it at the Cold Crystal Ore. You can pick it up and use it again, enabling infinite farming without any costs.
These Methods Don’t Work:
- Portable Warmer (tactical item)
- Torch (melee weapon)
- Weapon with the “Burn” effect
How to Use
Cold Crystal Ore is an important resource required for crafting specific items in the “Way of Winter” scenario:
- Coldium: This item can be crafted at the Supplies Workbench. It lasts for 60 minutes in your inventory and increases your Heat and Burn Resistance by 10 units during this time.
- Ice Crystal: Having the “Molecular Structure Research” Memetics Specialization allows you to craft Fire and Ice Crystals at the Supplies Workbench using Hot Rock Ore and Cold Crystal Ore, respectively. Ice Crystal is a consumable that increases your Heat Resistance by 10 for 10 minutes.
- Thermal Tower: Unlocking technologies in the Thermal Tower requires both Hot Rock Ore and Cold Crystal Ore.
- Furnace: Cold Crystal Ore can be used in the Furnace to decrease the temperature in a small radius.
- Chaosium: Chaosium is fuel for the Chaosium Lantern. It can be crafted at the Electric Furnace using Acid and either Cold Crystal Ore or Hot Rock Ore.
