Hot Rock Ore is a special ore that can only be found in the “Way of Winter” scenario. It spawns in the same places in the hot regions of the map.
Best Location
The best spot for infinite mining of Hot Rock Ore is next to the Fire Throat Base Teleportation Tower. There are at least 5 Hot Rock Ore deposits around this tower, most of which spawn along the road.
Similarly to common ores, Hot Rock Ore spawns separately for each world. So, when you gather all available deposits, you can switch worlds using the Teleportation Tower (interaction → G) and gather them again.
How to Gather
In order to mine Hot Rock Ore, you must first freeze it. There are 2 ways to do this:
Frost Grenades
Use Improved Frost Grenade or Enhanced Frost Grenade. Throw it at a deposit to reduce its temperature, and then mine it using a Steel Pickaxe or better.
Both Improved and Enhanced Frost Grenades can be crafted on the Synthesis Bench, but you will first need to unlock them in the Memetics → Crafting tab, under the nodes “Explosive Throwables” and “Advanced Explosive Throwables.”
Ice Throwing Dagger
This method is only available if you have the “Ice Throwing Dagger and Flame Throwing Dagger” Memetics Specialization. If you weren’t lucky enough to get it, you can buy fragments or even the daggers themselves from other players.
After you throw the Ice Throwing Dagger at a Hot Rock Ore deposit, it does not disappear, and you can pick it up again. At the moment, this is the most effective way because all you need for infinite Hot Rock Ore mining is 1 Ice Throwing Dagger.
These Methods Don’t Work:
- Sticky Ice Crystals (from Ice Pot deviant)
- Portable Air Conditioner (tactical item)
- Weapons with the Frost Vortex effect
- Frozen Northern Pike (melee weapon)
How to Use
There are several reasons to collect Hot Rock Ore:
- Heatium: This item can be crafted at the Supplies Workbench. It lasts for 60 minutes in your inventory and increases your Cold and Frost Resistance by 10 units during this time.
- Fire Crystal: If you have the rare Memetics Specialization called “Molecular Structure Research,” you can craft Fire and Ice Crystals at the Supplies Workbench using Hot Rock Ore and Cold Crystal Ore respectively. Fire Crystal is a consumable that increases your Cold Resistance by 10 for 10 minutes.
- Thermal Tower: Unlocking technologies in the Thermal Tower requires both Hot Rock Ore and Cold Crystal Ore.
- Furnace: Both Hot Rock Ore and Cold Crystal Ore can be used as fuel for the Furnace to increase or decrease temperature in a small radius.
- Chaosium: Chaosium is fuel for the Chaosium Lantern. It can be crafted at the Electric Furnace using Acid and Cold Crystal Ore / Hot Rock Ore.
