Cubic Odyssey: Game Modes Explained

Game Modes in Cubic Odyssey are linked to characters. When creating a new character, you can modify the “Game Setup”. It has only 3 options:

  • Game Mode (Survival / Creative).
  • Open Adventure (No / Yes) – if you choose “Yes,” it will disable the main quest line and its cinematic part, which means you will play without story missions.
  • Enable Tutorials (Yes / No) – using this option, you can disable tutorials. You shouldn’t do this if you are a beginner in Cubic Odyssey, though.

Game Setup

In this guide, I will explain the existing game modes and important nuances about them.

Survival Mode

Survival is the main game mode. Initially, all the recipes and discoveries are locked, and you must progress by exploring the galaxy in order to get better weapons, equipment, spaceships, etc. Note that in Cubic Odyssey, there are no classic survival element like hunger, thirst, tiredness, and others. You only have HP, Power (from fuel cells), and Shield.

If the “Open Adventure” option is disabled, you will have a storyline that will guide you. However, regardless of this option, you are still free to explore a huge open world – a galaxy with tens of systems and hundreds of planets.

Progression Systems

There are several directions of progression in Cubic Odyssey.

  • Storyline – if the “Open Adventure” option is disabled, your main progress is completing main quests to defeat the Red Darkness in the galaxy.
  • Character Level – your character has levels (1–30), but in the current patch it only unlocks new items to craft.
  • Skills – your character also has 9 skills, each of which has its own level (1–30). Skills gradually unlock new opportunities and make your character stronger.
  • Weapons & Equipment – basically, items are divided into T1–T7 tiers, but there are also Ancient Weapons and level 30 equipment in the game.
  • Ships (and their components) – you can complete the entire game on the starting spaceship, but you can also acquire better ones by purchasing them or finding them in space. In addition, you can craft / buy / find better components for your ship (Engine, Laser Gun, Cargo, Shield), which will make it more effective.
  • Solar Systems – every system has its level range, which depends on the levels of the planets. The higher the level, the stronger the enemies, but also the better the rewards. Exploring high-level planets is the key to faster progress in Cubic Odyssey.

Creative Mode

Besides the classic Survival mode, there is the Creative mode. In this mode, you can freely obtain almost any item in the game in one click. All you need to do is open your inventory (Tab), go to the “Discoveries” tab, and click on the item you need. The item will appear in your inventory.

However, not every item can be obtained in this way. For example, you still can’t get speeders, ships, ancient weapons, and level 30 equipment.

Game Saving System

You should also know that saved games are linked to the characters. They are saved in the C:\Users\User\Documents\Cubic Odyssey\save directory. When you switch characters, the list of saved games also changes. So if your saved games suddenly disappear, most likely you forgot to switch characters.

Also, in the early version of the game, there is a bug that completely repairs your damaged ship’s durability when you load a saved game.
