The world of Cubic Odyssey consists of dozens of star systems, each of which has several planets. In this guide, I will explain to you all the ways to travel across the game world.
Travelling on a Planet
When it comes to travelling within the map of a single planet, there are several ways. They are important to know because planets in Cubic Odyssey are quite large, and it would take a lot of time to explore them on foot.
Speeder
The speeder is your first transport in Cubic Odyssey. The starting speeder is called Arkana Monster, and it can be found broken not far from the spaceship crash site. Just like a ship, a column of smoke rises from it, so you will easily find it.
You should repair this speeder as soon as possible. For this, you will need to craft certain materials, which require various ores, and there is a separate ore guide on the website, where I’ve explained how to mine them.
Once you repair the speeder, you will see it in your inventory and will be able to summon it any time. However, remember that summoning the speeder (as well as using the speed boost – Shift) costs quite a lot of power from your Gear Fuel Cells (batteries), so you shouldn’t waste it.
The speeder will allow you to explore planets in the starting system much faster and more comfortably. For example, despite the fact that you’re riding a speeder, you can still shoot using firearms. Thanks to this feature, you have a mobility advantage when it comes to fights against pirates or hostile fauna.
Jetpack
At the beginning of the game, after completing a certain story quest, you also get a Jetpack. It allows you to fly up by holding the Space key for a short period of time, which is very useful in caves and mines.
A Jetpack requires a little energy from the batteries, and it has a certain fuel capacity, which depends on the quality of the Jetpack itself. The better it is, the longer you can fly upwards. In the future, you will be able to craft better jetpacks at an Armory Bench and enhance them using mods at a Modding Bench.
Spaceship
You will get your first ship in the very first hours of gameplay. It’s going to be the ship you crashed on, and it is called Mikro. A spaceship in Cubic Odyssey opens up quite a lot of new useful opportunities for a player.
First of all, you can place up to 3 facilities or storage chests inside, which will allow you to carry more stuff, refine ore, and craft things. Also, a spaceship has its own cargo space where you can store even more materials. But the most important thing is that a spaceship allows you to travel very fast not only within one planet but also between different planets, and even within solar systems.
If you are within a 50m radius from the ship, you can interact with it (E) and climb aboard. For this, you should press “Pilot” (instantly take the helm) or “Embark” (just teleport to the cabin).
If you are far away from your ship, you can teleport to it via the inventory menu (Tab). Press the button with the ship’s name “Mikro,” and wait 2 seconds. Note that teleporting to the ship costs power from Gear Fuel Cells, so you should keep an eye on it, especially at the early stages of the game.
When you use your ship as transport for exploring a planet map, you should avoid using speed boosts (Shift), because they will very quickly burn down your Ship Fuel Cells for nothing. Instead of this, you should rise your ship above the level of the clouds, and its speed will increase several times.
The thing is, when you are beneath the level of the clouds, your ship can only fly slowly, so you can explore the surface. But when you are above the clouds, the ship increases its speed drastically, and you can reach the opposite side of the map in just a few seconds.
Travel Terminals and Travel Points
You can also teleport between Travel Terminals and Travel Points within a planet. Every settlement has its own Travel Terminal, but you can also build custom ones at any location on the planet map — for example, at your base. A Travel Point facility can be crafted at a Crafting Bench. Once you craft it and place it on the planet, you will be able to use it for teleportation.
You can even use Travel Points to teleport to your ship for free. Unlike teleporting via the inventory, teleporting via Travel Points does not require power from Gear Fuel Cells.
Travelling Between Planets
Most solar systems in Cubic Odyssey contain multiple planets, and you can freely travel between them on your spaceship. First of all, you must leave the current planet. For this, you can just fly upwards until you go into outer space or press “J” on your keyboard, so your spaceship does this automatically.
After that, you can aim at any planet in the system and press “J” to start cruising. Your engines will charge for a short period of time, and then the ship will cruise toward the target planet at a very high speed. You can stop cruising at any time, though.
Also, note that in dangerous solar systems, pirates might interrupt your cruise and start attacking you. Repairing a spaceship costs a lot, so I would not recommend you fight them at early stages of the game. Instead of this, quickly launch cruise again (J) to escape from pursuit.
Early versions of the game have a bug: when you reload your saved game, the durability of your spaceship is always full, even if it was damaged before. You should check this out and use, if it works.
Travelling Between Systems
There are 3 ways at the moment to travel between solar systems in Cubic Odyssey: warp-jumps, warp gates, and planet portals. First of all, you must perform a warp-jump to a certain system, which requires Warp Cells. After you discover Warp Gates in that system, you will be able to use them to jump between visited systems for free. Finally, after you unlock and craft a Planet Portal, you will be able to place it on any planet and freely teleport between them regardless of which system they are in.
Warp-Jump
A single warp-jump requires one Warp Cell. You will get your first 3 Warp Cells after completing a corresponding mission on the Bardwell 2 planet. Before performing a warp-jump, you will need to put a Warp Cell into the corresponding slot on your ship and go to outer space.
After that, open the map and go to the “Galaxy” tab, select any system within Warp range (the list of such systems is displayed on the left side), and press “J” to perform a warp-jump to the selected system. Every such jump consumes 1 Warp Cell. Do not waste these cells, since you can use Warp Gates to jump between visited systems for free.
Pay attention that every system has a level range (e.g., 10–12), which means it will be difficult for you to survive there with a lower-level character. The pirate and hostile fauna mobs will be significantly stronger, but the rewards are also better.
Warp Gates
After you visit a system, you can use any Warp Gate to travel to it without spending Warp Cells. A Warp Gate is present in every system and usually has a space station nearby with various NPCs and facilities.
All you need to do is fly directly into the gate. The map of the galaxy will open up, where you must choose a target system. Available systems are displayed on the left side. After that, you will be teleported to the system you chose.
Planet Portals
Planet portals are probably the most important teleportation devices because they allow you to have an easily accessible static base on any planet. Planet Portals allow you to teleport between them regardless of which solar systems they are placed in. This means if you place one portal on a planet in one system and the second portal on a planet in another system, you will still be able to teleport between them. Here I have very important tips for you.
First of all, set up a static base on some good planet. Despite the fact that you can place 3 facilities inside your starting spaceship (Mikro), it is still not enough, and you will need many more. I recommend you set up your base on the planet Bardwell 2, next to the Ancient Temple, or even better – inside it. The thing is, this temple initially has a Planet Portal.
So, here is what you’re gonna do:
- Craft one Planet Portal and always have it with you;
- When you need to visit your base, place this Planet Portal anywhere and use it to teleport to the temple;
- From there, go to your base nearby, and after you do what you need, use the Planet Portal in the Ancient Temple to teleport back;
- Don’t forget to dismantle your portal and put it back into your inventory.
- Now you can continue exploring new worlds.
VERY IMPORTANT THING: If you are on one planet, and your spaceship is on another one, an attempt to teleport to the ship will result in summoning the ship to the planet you are currently on. In addition, both the ship and you will be moved to the border of the map.
A positive side of this feature is that, this way, you can quickly summon your ship with all the cargo to the planet with your base. You just teleport to the home planet using your mobile Planet Portal, then summon the ship, fly to your base, and unload cargo.
A negative side is that you might lose your Planet Portal if you try to summon the ship on the planet you are exploring. Planet Portals are not displayed on the map, so you should remember a simple rule: FIRST – dismantle the portal, THEN – summon the ship; not vice versa.
