To plant any seeds or trees in Valheim, you must have a Cultivator tool. In order to discover the recipe for a cultivator, you must have Core Wood and Bronze in your inventory. The recipe also requires a level 1 Forge.
It takes 5 Core Wood and 5 Bronze to craft a cultivator tool. Core Wood can be obtained from pines in the Black Forest, and Bronze can be smelted from Cooper and Tin. Both cooper and tin ores can be found in the Black Forest as well.
How to cultivate the ground
In order to plant any seeds, you should previously cultivate the ground. But first, it will be wise to level the ground with a hoe.
Take a hoe in your hands, press the RMB (right mouse button), and select “Level Ground“. Then click on the ground. The tool will strive to level the ground to the same level as the place where the player stands.
After that, take a cultivator, press RMB, and select “Cultivate“. Press LMB on the ground to cultivate it.
The ground will change its color and texture. You can plant seeds on the cultivated ground.
How to plant seeds in Valheim
In order to plant seeds, you must have them in your inventory. Then you can take a cultivator, press RMB, and select the corresponding plant, for example, carrot.
Plant the plant into the cultivated ground by pressing LMB. Make sure there is enough space between plants; otherwise, they won’t grow.
If there is not enough space between plants, you will see the message “Needs more room to grow” when looking at them.
After a few days (depending on the plant type), the plants will have grown, and you will be able to harvest them by pressing “E“.
To harvest seeds instead of fruit, you must plant fruit instead of seeds. Take a cultivator, press RMB, select a seed-plant (for example, a seed-carrot), and plant it into the cultivated ground.
After a while, you will be able to harvest seeds. This way, you can breed plants in Valheim.
Protect the plants
Mobs that may spawn nearby can eat plants from your garden. To prevent mobs from stealing your vegetables, you should protect your garden with a fence.

How to plant trees in Valheim
Trees in Valheim can be planted on the ground without cultivation. In order to plant a tree, you must have corresponding seeds in your inventory. Take a cultivator, select a tree you want to plant, and plant it in the ground.
As well as other plants, trees won’t grow if there isn’t enough space between them. Each tree type has its own growth time. After this time, the tree will grow without any additional actions from the player’s side.
