Fishing in Undawn is implemented in a highly primitive manner, similar to typical mobile MMOs. You simply cast your fishing rod with bait and when a fish bites, you reel it in. However, there are a few nuances to the fishing process that are worth discussing.
Why do you need fishing?
Engaging in fishing gradually levels up your “Angler” role. The final perk of this profession, like most others, provides a boost to your character’s base stats, which you wouldn’t want to ignore.
The second reason you need fishing in Undawn is to complete certain key achievements and tasks found in the Esc → Story → Adventure Guide section (more on this later).
And the third reason why you need fishing is for the fish itself, which you can use to cook beneficial dishes. For example, the “Fish & Egg Sandwich” increases damage reduction against humans by 7.0%, which is useful in both PvE and PvP (in the late stages of the game).

How to craft fishing rods of different levels
To craft fishing rods, you must open the character crafting panel (press “O” key). The higher the level of the fishing rod, the more types of fish you can catch with it. Fishing rods of higher levels have the same durability (150) as lower-level fishing rods.
To unlock the ability to craft higher-level fishing rods, you must level up the “Fishing Tool” perk of the “Angler” profession. Leveling up this perk becomes available at certain character levels. For example, crafting Lv. 3 fishing rods unlocks at level 50, while crafting Lv. 4 fishing rods unlocks at level 70.
The fishing rod, like other tools, is equipped in the corresponding inventory slot.
How to Obtain Bait
There are several types of bait available. Most of them can be crafted through the character’s crafting panel (press “O“):
- Omnivorous Fish Bait,
- Carnivorous Fish Bait,
- Common Fish Bait,
- Herbivorous Fish Bait,
- And possibly others.
You can also purchase 20 Unique Fish Bait per week with silver in the Esc → Market → Raven Shop → Ingredients section. Some fish in the game only bite on this bait.
Manual Fishing and Auto-Fishing
To start fishing, you need to approach the water and equip a fishing rod. Open the Survive (U) → Portable Tools panel or click on the diamond-shaped icon with three dots next to the chat in the lower left corner of the main interface.
Click on the slot next to the fishing rod to select the bait.
After that, it’s simple:
- Short press of “F” to cast the fishing rod in front of you;
- Holding down “F” allows you to choose the exact spot where you want to cast the fishing rod;
- When a fish bites, press “F” again to reel it in.
The process of auto-fishing is unlocked by leveling up the “Auto-Fishing” perk in the “Angler” profession. This perk is available from the early stages of the game.
Note that the fish you catch will be displayed in the Fish Basket section. This is done for convenience so that you can check your catch without digging through your inventory for too long.
Normal Fishing vs Shoal Fishing
Fishing in Undawn is divided into two types: “normal fishing” and “shoal fishing.”
“Normal fishing” is regular fishing where you simply cast the fishing rod into any body of water from any location.
“Shoal fishing” is fishing at special fishing spots. On the mini-map, these spots are displayed as fish icons.
Approaching a shoal, you will notice a bubbling area on the water surface and even be able to see the fish shoal underwater if you look closely. When you hover the cursor over a shoal, a pop-up window will appear showing the types of fish you can catch at that location.
For shoal fishing, you must carefully cast the fishing rod into the shoal. In these spots, fish bite more frequently than in normal fishing. Additionally, some fish can only be caught through shoal fishing.
Keep in mind that shoals can move around the body of water, appearing and disappearing regardless of whether you are fishing in them or not.
Where to Catch Each Fish and Choose the Right Bait
By clicking the “Manual” button during fishing, you will access the built-in Undawn fishing encyclopedia.
The most important section in the Fishing Manual is “Water.” Here, you can find information on which fish can be caught in different regions.
Note that some fish can only be caught using normal fishing, while others require shoal fishing. For example, the Turtle in Redwood Forest can only be caught through shoal fishing, while Carp can only be caught through normal fishing.
Make sure to click on the specific fish and check if there is a label that says “Unique fish bait required” in its description. If such a label is present, it means that this type of fish can only be caught using Unique Fish Bait, as mentioned earlier.
Tasks and Achievements
Here, I will list some tasks and achievements related to fishing that may pose challenges for beginners.
- “Catch a black bass and cook beer-braised bass.” This is a task from the Adventure Guide. By “black bass,” they mean the Largemouth Bass, which can be caught in Central Plains, Koller Mines, and even in Golden Desert. It bites on “Omnivorous Fish Bait.” To cook the dish “Beer-braised bass,” you simply need to place 2 Largemouth Bass on your grill.
- “Catch 5 puffers.” This is a key achievement in the Achievements → Explore section. Puffers can be caught using Unique Fish Bait in the Redwood Forest region.
